Legacy System Upgrades

Overview

The presence of legacy software or hardware within a process, can present a maintenance risk. Replacement hardware components may no longer be available from a manufacturer or software may not be compatible with currently supported computer operating systems.

Simplicity AI offer a review service, which aims to identify the risks within a legacy system and make recommendations on how to reduce them. As computer technology has advanced quickly compared to other areas, it is often possible to just replace this aspect of a system, in the process giving more functionality and flexibility.

Software Upgrades

Support for software written to run on DOS, Windows 3.x or Windows 9x has been phased out by software and hardware vendors. Software written using DOS only programming languages such as QuickBasic or utilizing older hardware drivers, can be difficult to move to newer systems.

Simplicity AI are able to rewrite software using modern development languages and coding techniques. By working with the client to understand how they use the software, new technologies such as network communications and database logging, can be integrated. Future maintenance cost and obsolescence risks will be reduced by using industry standard technologies, which have a history of maintaining backward compatibility.

Hardware Upgrades

Measurement and automation systems using custom circuit board or IC designs can be difficult to maintain, as manufacturers phase out older components or knowledge disappears from an organisation. Older internal computer bus technologies are disappearing, as PCs become more like sealed units.

Simplicity AI aim to replace custom hardware with standard off the shelf technology. Bespoke circuits can be replaced with FPGAs, digital signal processing and real-time software. Industry standard bus technologies with a high longevity, such as, USB, Ethernet or PXI can be used to ensure future supportability.
